If your clients are looking to benefit local charities, desire simplicity in administration, and want the expertise of a trusted financial manager, they can have it all by using the Salem Foundation.

The Salem Foundation is a locally administered community foundation established in 1930, of which Pioneer Trust Bank, N.A., is the trustee. The Salem Foundation functions like any community foundation and emphasizes giving in the Salem area – although gifts may be made outside of this geographic area. It is governed by a Distribution Committee consisting of five local citizens with knowledge of the area and interest in charitable activities. The Committee members are appointed by a diverse group including the Governor of Oregon and the Mayor of Salem.

The Salem Foundation accepts funds for any charitable purpose and generally divides its funds into three classifications:

  • Designated Funds – for a particular charity or numerous charities based on the donor’s particular area(s) of interest.
  • Donor Advised Funds – our most popular type of fund. The donor may give non-binding advice to the Distribution Committee on projects to be funded. Donor Advised Funds, since they are under the control of the Salem Foundation, are much simpler to administer than individual private foundations.
  • General or Unrestricted Funds – disburses funds based on decisions made by the Distribution Committee and upon application by charitable organizations.

All three types of funds present wonderful opportunities for donors to have funds named in their honor or in a loved one’s memory. Designating The Salem Foundation in their will or trust or designating The Salem Foundation as a beneficiary on a retirement account or life insurance policy allows your clients to support the charities important to them.
